Yachting World had an article on the First 30 in the October issue. Now there’s an article on their website as well. Looks like a fun boat! I wonder what it would be like cruising with a planing yacht like the First 30.
The affordable planing cruiser that’s fun and fast.
Since I started the cockpit table project, work has been progressing nicely. Each and every day I’ve done some small task. So far I’m pleased with the result, it’s an old table with patina and wear so finish wont be perfect
This is what has happened:
Sanded the table to remove the old varnish. Had to be careful to not damage the plywood.
Added a covering layer of clear varnish hoping to get more even color when adding the stained varnish.
Added a couple of layers of stained varnish with light sanding in between.
Next step is to add two layers of clear varnish, I’m happy with the amount of warmth and color in the table as it is now.
If a lens hood is small enough and beautiful enough it will get used. And Squarehood lens hoods are just that.
I´ve been photographing without lens hoods for as long as I can remember. It´s just odd cases and situations when I´ve used a lens hood, well except on my Fuji 35mm f2 lens, that lens hood is so small that it´s always on the lens.
When I lost the hood for my Fuji 23mm f1.4 I started looking for alternatives, I quickly zoomed in on Squarehood. Squarehood is a Swedish company that makes lens hoods for e.g. Fuji lenses and wow are those hoods beautiful.
I ordered hoods for my Fuji 23mm f1.4 and Fuji 50mm f2 Tuesday this week and recieved them Wednesday. Quick delivery!
The hoods are made out of anodized aluminium and come with a rubber/plastic cap which firmly clicks into place. The hoods are easily attached using the lens bayonet mount.
The Hilleberg Soulo is a free standing solo tent that is both light and tough.
Background
I’ve been using my Red Label Hilleberg Soulo for eight years and I’ve used it in all conditions: winter as well as summer. It’s the tent I almost always pack when I go out on my own, whether it is hiking, kayaking or skiing. It is my favorite tent and I´ve used it extensivelly. Soulo means “Island” in the Sami language.
Requirements I had when I bought the Soulo
One man tent
Free standing and stable
A small vestibule to be able to store some belongings
A tent for year round usage
For kayaking adventures primarily
Compact and reasonably light
Hilleberg Soulo facts (Red Label)
Since the Soulo´s free standing construction allows it to be pitched almost anywhere, and since it is remarkably light and tremendously strong, it is ideal for almost any adventure. During its development, nearly every tester found it perfect for whatever trip it was used on. Mountaineers, both recreational and professional, will take to its strength and low weight, as will backcountry hunters and winter campers. Bicycle, motorcycle and paddle tourers will choose it for its free standing simplicity and compact packed size. Backpackers in all seasons, long distance trekkers, and weekend hikers alike will be drawn to its light weight and integrated vestibule, and ski tourers and ski mountaineers will appreciate its snow load handling. Tall users will love its length, and all will appreciate its remarkable overall roominess.

Hilleberg Soulo advantages
It´s a very well made tent with well designed details. Classic Hilleberg feel throughout.
The tent is compact and the footprint is small so it’s easy to find places to pitch the tent.
The tent is very easy to set up and take down with the clips that attach to the poles.
Linked but separable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.
The gutter on the roof tile is a nice detail, it prevents dripping from the roof tile into the vestibule when you open the door.
The dome construction with multiple pole crossing points making it very stable.
When you set up the tent with ground pegs it’s bombproof. It feels like a very safe tent that can withstand the roughest of conditions.
There is plenty enough interior space for spring/summer/autumn and one person.
Good interior height in the middle of the tent but the height falls quickly when not in the middle.
Ok ventilation. But nothing magical.
The tent easily fits long and wide sleeping mats.
Hilleberg Soulo disadvantages
It’s a small:ish tent. Calling it minimalist isn’t right but the interior space and vestibule size is limited. Spring, summer and autumn it works great. For nordic winter conditions with a lot of equipment and bulky clothes you might have to think about it and maybe you should look at a bigger tent.
I didn´t like the 9mm poles that came with the tent, I prefer having the 10mm poles to have a more stable tent, especially when pitching the tent without any pegs or other support.
The inner tent is asymmetrical and the idea is that you should sleep with your head towards the entrance (however, you can sleep in either direction without problems).
There’s only pockets in the inner tent at the head end.
The rain cover for the door zipper could have been longer. I often get caught at the start of the rain cover when I close the door (see picture below).
When I bought my Soulo the Black Label version didn´t exist, there was only the Red Label version. If I would buy a Soulo today I´d buy the Black Label version to get the 10mm poles.
Summary and rating
I am very happy with my Red Label version Hilleberg Soulo, it´s my most used tent. I mainly use it for sea kayaking adventures and for that use case I’d give the tent a 5 out of 5 rating. It´s fantastic!

Sunday morning started with lots of rain. I waited patiently for the sun that was supposed to come. And it did. After the nine o’clock coffee I went down to the boat club, raining had stopped and the sun was shining from a clear blue sky.
Beautiful autumn weather
I had two things on my todo list:
Check the batteries.
Finish the covering of the boat.
The solar cell was having a good time in the sun gathering energy for the batteries. Not that much sun was needed, the batteries were already full.
Solar cell gathering light
Most of the boat was covered since many weeks back, what needed to be done was close off fore and aft. Before I closed off fore and aft I took the time to enjoy the view, it will be at least five months until I can start thinking of removing the boat cover again.

Over the years I´ve had two pairs of Oakley sunglasses, partly a pair of Frogskins and partly a pair of Holbrook. And I must say that the Holbrook model is by far the best pair of sunglasses I´ve ever had. It´s an awesome pair of sunglasses.
Background
I use sunglasses a lot, there´s almost no outdoor situation when I don´t use them. I use them sailing, paddling, skiing, hiking. I use them when I commute by bike to the office, I use them when training. It’s one of the pieces of equipment I use the most. So having a pair of sunglasses that I like is important.
Facts
Holbrook comes in two sizes: Regular and XL. Holbrook are made of a lightweight O Matter™ frame material with Square O metal icon and front rivet accents and they are available with a number of different lens options including the Prizm™ lenses to enhance color, contrast and detail.
I use a pair of regular size custom Holbrook with matte white frame, black icons and rivets and a Prizm Black Iridium lens. I’ve used them for a couple of years now.
Holbrook is a timeless, classic design fused with modern Oakley technology. Inspired by the screen heroes from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, this design epitomizes the spirit of exploration and adventure. The iconic American frame design is accented by metal rivets and Oakley icons, perfect for those who seek equal parts performance and style.

What do I think of the Oakley Holbrook
I´m really happy with my Holbrook sunglasses. They are comfortable and have a nice fit. I can use them for every imaginable use case. They seem to be long lasting, so far there are no signs that I need to buy new pair. I also appreciate the timeless design, Holbrook might never be the coolest pair of glasses but they also never grow old. Finally, the best part about Oakley sunglasses according to me: The Prizm™ lens, it´s a beauty.
My wife and daughter have tried my Holbrook sunglasses but don´t like them. Seems like the Holbrook geometry doesn´t suit small people.
The biggest downside with Oakley Holbrook is that they are expensive for a piece of plastic. Would I buy them again? Yes I would but since they are expensive I´d look for a nice price deal.
Our small cockpit table needs restoration. We will sand it and then add stained Epifanes Clear Varnish.
We have a small and a big cockpit table for our Linjett 33. The small one we haven´t used much, it´s kind of sad looking and worn but we like the shape and size. So we have decided to try to restore it to part of its former glory.
The plan is to sand the table and then add layers of Epifanes Clear Varnish stained using Epifanes Classic Mahogny Stain. I used the Clear Varnish product for the tiller earlier this year and was very pleased with the result. Let´s see how the cockpit table turns out.
News on the website of Swedish public service television company SVT has it that the Swedish Maritime Administration will be investing 1.5 billion Swedish kronor (approximately 140 million Euros) to renovate and upgrade lighthouses in Sweden, 75 lighthouses per year over a ten-year period. There are also plans to relight some extinguished lighthouses.
There has been an increased number of GPS system jammings in the region. The aim of the lighthouse initiative is to improve maritime safety and reduce risks.
Saturday. Rain is pouring down outside. It´s grey and boring and I´m in front of the computer looking at images in Lightroom. The archive from this summer is big, suddenly this image presents itself to me. I overlooked it earlier this year and never edited it.
The image is of a J/70 heading out to the start line of the 2025 Ulvö regatta at the High Coast of Sweden. The Ulvö regatta has been around for a long time, in 2009 it celebrated its 100th anniversary with over 100 participating boats.
