• In the January issue Yachting World is testing the J/Boats J/40 cruiser. From the video it really looks like a really slippery sporty forty cruiser.

The heading of the test in the magazine is: ‘Pinnacle of evolution‘. And on the cover of the magazine it says ‘Driver’s delight‘.

  • It was a long time since I used my kayak ergo, but today it happened. Averaged 5,6 knots over 40 minutes of easy paddling. As often I watched Youtube while on the ergo, Hallberg-Rassy was in charge of todays entertainment.

The Hallberg-Rassy 340 is a really beautiful yacht! Check out the sailing and walkthrough video.

  • If there´s one weather our boat don´t like while on the hard in the winter, it´s strong winds from south-southeast combined with wet snow. In those conditions Festina Lente is exposed to the elements. That´s just what we had today. The worst weather!

Went down to the harbor after work to check on the tarpaulin covering the boat. Wind was from south-southeast, wet snow was blowing sideways and the temperature was around freezing point. It was miserable; cold, wet and windy.

The tarpaulin was not in a bad condition but I just had to fix it a bit. A bit of fixing took me some 90 minutes of fighting. I think I might just have said some ugly words and cursing the weather gods.

Hopefully this was this year´s wet snow in combination with a strong south-southesterly wind, fingers crossed.

  • Today our boat club arranged a small get together in the club house. Mulled wine and gingerbread was served. Nice to meet all of the members that joined in. My wife and I took the opportunity to check on the boat while we were still in the harbor.

I have to admit that the picture is a bit blurry but that is what you get when trying to handhold the camera in bad light.

  • Over the years I´ve had two pairs of Oakley sunglasses, partly a pair of Frogskins and partly a pair of Holbrook. And I must say that the Holbrook model is by far the best pair of sunglasses I´ve ever had. It´s an awesome pair of sunglasses.

    Background

I use sunglasses a lot, there´s almost no outdoor situation when I don´t use them. I use them sailing, paddling, skiing, hiking. I use them when I commute by bike to the office, I use them when training. It’s one of the pieces of equipment I use the most. So having a pair of sunglasses that I like is important.

    Facts

Holbrook comes in two sizes: Regular and XL. Holbrook are made of a lightweight O Matter™ frame material with Square O metal icon and front rivet accents and they are available with a number of different lens options including the Prizm™ lenses to enhance color, contrast and detail.

I use a pair of regular size custom Holbrook with matte white frame, black icons and rivets and a Prizm Black Iridium lens. I’ve used them for a couple of years now.

Holbrook is a timeless, classic design fused with modern Oakley technology. Inspired by the screen heroes from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, this design epitomizes the spirit of exploration and adventure. The iconic American frame design is accented by metal rivets and Oakley icons, perfect for those who seek equal parts performance and style.

What do I think of the Oakley Holbrook

I´m really happy with my Holbrook sunglasses. They are comfortable and have a nice fit. I can use them for every imaginable use case. They seem to be long lasting, so far there are no signs that I need to buy new pair. I also appreciate the timeless design, Holbrook might never be the coolest pair of glasses but they also never grow old. Finally, the best part about Oakley sunglasses according to me: The Prizm™ lens, it´s a beauty.

My wife and daughter have tried my Holbrook sunglasses but don´t like them. Seems like the Holbrook geometry doesn´t suit small people.

The biggest downside with Oakley Holbrook is that they are expensive for a piece of plastic. Would I buy them again? Yes I would but since they are expensive I´d look for a nice price deal.

  • Hilleberg has published a video where they test a Unna tent in hard winds, with different poles and/or guy lines configurations. It´s interesting to see how the tent behaves.

  • Dan and Kika run the Youtube-channel ‘Sailing Uma‘. I follow their channel constantly. It all started seven years ago when a friend of theirs said: “…don´t buy a couch!”. They followed the advice, rescued an old sailboat and started sailing the world.

  • For many years I´ve admired the creations from the drawing board of Swedish yacht designern Gabriel Heyman. Recently Yachting World tested the Heyman 42 PPH, check out the video.

A full report from the test will be in Yachting World‘s December issue 2024.

Galet. Helt galet!
